Situation

A 50-metre shaft needed bringing back into service.

Challenge

Full refurbishment under confined space controls, surface to base.

Solution

The full depth of the shaft was refurbished, top to bottom.

Result

The shaft was returned to service.

What was required

A 50-metre shaft needed bringing back into service. Before it could carry work again it had to be refurbished top to bottom, all of it under confined space controls.

‍

Our approach

Working from the surface down to the base, the team refurbished the full depth of the shaft. Confined space entry, atmosphere monitoring and controlled access governed every stage. Nothing went ahead of the checks.

‍

‍

At depth the practicalities take over: what goes down and comes back up, how long a crew stays below, how the air is watched. The refurbishment was planned around those limits, not squeezed past them.

Refurished water main shaft back in action

The shaft was returned to service, refurbished across its full 50 metres and ready for the work it was built to support.
